Our Story

Para Jose “El Simio” Ayala

Gracias por creer en mi y darme la oportunidad que cambio mi vida para siempre

~Beto

“El Gambusino” officially started in 2003, but the idea of El Gambusino started way before then.   Born and raised in Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico. Martin “Beto” Martinez first stepped foot into a jewelers shop asking for a job at the age of 12. There wasn’t much he could do at that age but they would let him sweep and clean around the area for pay. Beto’s curiosity grew as he saw the jewelers repairing and creating different type of jewelry. One person saw his interest and curiosity and one day told him “if you truly want to learn, you will come everyday stand next to me and watch everything I do”. This person was Jose Ayala,  the person who started as his employer, his teacher, and who  become to be life long friend.

It didn’t take Beto long to learn the trade. By the time he was 16, he was working side by side with Jose in the workshop. A few years later Jose started working out of his home and took Beto with him and continued working together until the late 90’s. Then the fall of gold came and times got rough.  Beto decided he needed to look elsewhere for the time being and decided to go to California. This decision wasn’t the best and timing wasn’t right he lasted a year and decided to return to  Guadalajara. Once back he started working out of a room in his house again returning to the field of jewelry. While the gold market was on the rise times were still tough.

In 2000 another opportunity arose to go to Texas to work in what he has always known; jewelry. He again took a leap of faith and decided to take the offer. He arrived in Amarillo Texas and started repairing jewelry out of his home for a local jewelry store. After a few months Beto began accumulating his own tools & supplies and opened up a booth at a local flea market. It was there where his life would change.

After a couple of months he met the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world and by coincidence or her necklace happened to break. Two months later they were married. A year after that their twins were born.  Beto continued to work at the flea market for the next 20years doing repairs.

In 2020 they decided to expand spaces, expand merchandise and expand ideas. For many 2020 was a curse but for them it was a blessing. It was time to take a chance and expand, to quit being afraid to take a risks. Beto’s focus had always only been repairing or custom orders by request. At the beginning of 2020 they started adding more gold and silver inventory and things started picking up. With this it was time to start looking into different horizons. Josh, one of their sons had gone off to college to Jewelry School and was coming back with the newer technology. It no longer was only Beto repairing; he now had Josh at his side helping him.

And this brings us to now. Taking the chance and opening up a new spot and hoping to transition out of the flea market and into bigger and better horizons.
